Summer Services

Summer is almost here!  Love it or hate it, it's on the way.  Laying out a fresh plan for the summer is one of my absolute favorite things to do.  It helps my household so much to go into a summer with a specific, intentional, and flexible plan.  I'd love to help you bring intentionality, purpose, and structure to your household this summer, too.

Setting Goals

The unstructured nature of summer break is so fun, but many parents feel almost paralyzed with how to capitalize on the gift of this free time.  Determining beforehand where you want to invest your time can be challenging, but it is so worth the effort.  I'd love to help you think through:

  • Are there any skills you'd like to see your child develop?  If so, how could we build that into summer break?

  • Are there any activities you never have time for during the hustle and bustle of the school year?  Let's build those in, too.

  • What do you want the rhythms in your house to look like from week to week?  Laundry, dishes, chores, camps, summer work, and the pull of screens may all try to overshadow the healthy rhythms you truly desire.  We can equip you beforehand to push back.

Creating Sustainable Family Systems

Once you've prioritized your goals and assessed how you really want to invest your time with your family, we can create a very specific, individualized set of systems for you to begin implementing.  Having a system in place may include some or all of the following:

  • Chore, behavior, and/ or attitude charts

  • Rewards systems for your children

  • Time blocks on the calendar to protect the family events and rhythms that you determine are most valuable

  • Activity "banks" full of alternatives and/ or precursors to screen time

Why Have A System

If you really want to be flexible, rest, enjoy your time, but also make sure you are prioritizing and accomplishing some things throughout the chaos of summer break, a system can help you do just that.

  • Kids typically LOVE structure, even when they push back.

  • A semi-structured plan can improve behavior, reduce (not eliminate!) sibling conflict and complaining.

  • You will be able to visually see the amount of time devoted to each of your priorities, and easily adjust according to what is best for your family, in real time.

  • These systems will help you and your kids balance fun, relaxation, and productivity.

  • The activity "banks" will allow children to work through boredom on their own, without you over-scheduling and planning all of their fun.  Being bored is critical to problem-solving skills, and is so good for your kids.

  • If moderation for screen time is important to you, a pre-determined system can help clarify exactly what your kids can expect with screens throughout the summer and hopefully reduce any begging or grumbling for those screens.

  • These plans will consider not just your kids' needs, but your needs, too.  Having the margin to exercise, read, spend time with your own friends, and whatever else may refresh and revitalize you is so important.
